Building a Sustainable Communication Network

Connecting Islands – Building a Sustainable Communication Network Between Bluewater Sailors and Remote Island Communities in Melanesia

Connecting Islands is a non-profit initiative that aims to strengthen communication, cooperation, and mutual support between remote island communities and the international bluewater sailing community.

Each year, cruising sailors visit isolated islands across the Pacific, often seeking authentic cultural encounters and meaningful engagement with local communities. Many crews are willing to contribute and support the places they visit, but they often have little information about what is actually needed. As a result, opportunities for useful exchange, cooperation, and long-term relationships are frequently missed.

Our goal for this initiative is to establish a practical communication network through which island communities can share their needs, priorities, and opportunities with visiting yachts before they arrive. This allows sailors to respond to real requests rather than relying on assumptions, and to bring goods, skills, information, or support that are genuinely useful.

At the same time, the project is designed to create value for both sides: Island communities can offer fresh produce, locally made goods, guiding services, cultural experiences, practical assistance, and their unique knowledge of local waters, anchorages, weather patterns, and traditions. Visiting sailors, in return, gain local insight, authentic experiences, and opportunities to connect with communities in a respectful and meaningful way.

The project will begin with an expedition through Melanesia, working closely with island communities and sailors to better understand existing needs, identify practical communication channels, and explore models for long-term cooperation.

Ultimately, Connecting Islands is about building lasting relationships between people who share the ocean. It seeks to create a future where every visit becomes an opportunity for meaningful exchange, mutual support, and genuine cultural connection.
